Chronic Pain Managment
Tame the Beast that is chronic pain.
Persistent pain have a hold of your life? It’s time to Tame the Beast. CLICK HERE to watch a very short video about how pain researchers are helping to change pain what we know about chronic pain and how to treat it.
The current medical system is still using the archaic Biomedical approach to health care that’s been around since the 1960’s. It wasn’t until the late 1970’s that Dr. George
Engel said that not all pain comes from tissue damage, and to treat pain, we need to look at the person as a whole, not as a sum of the parts. It’s took another 25 years before people started listening. Now in the past 5 years, with the advocacy of Pain BC, things are starting to change. Practitioners are starting to change.
Dr. Brittney Chisholm is trained through Pain BC’s Chronic Pain for Chiropractors to help manage chronic pain conditions. But her journey didn’t begin there. READ MORE HERE about Dr. Chisholm’s journey with chronic pain and how she is using her knowledge to help others learn to thrive.
If you have been to everyone, tried everything, and still you’re nowhere near where you’d like to be with your pain; if you’re ready to try something different, make a commitment to yourself, and be ready to change — then you’ve found the right place.
Why are we different?
1. We take our time with you. In a usual physio/chiropractic/medical appointment, the practitioner typically has 5-30 minutes in which to gather as much information as possible from you, perform a physical exam, create a (typically) singular diagnosis, and then is rushed to deliver a hands-on treatment.
We will not be rushed. This is a 3 hour examination & physical. We will delve in to every aspect of your physical health history (past injuries, surgeries, illnesses, genetic history, family health history, medications, comorbid conditions, do you exercise, do you smoke, etc.), your social health history (are you married/divorced, living alone, are you working, on disability or stress leave, do you have family around, do you like your family, are you introverted or extroverted, education, culture, gender, what’s your housing situation), and your psychological health history (anxiety, depression, personality disorders, beliefs about self, beliefs about pain, beliefs about capacity, personality traits, STRESSORS i.e. financial, interpersonal, relational).
2. We believe that knowledge is the greatest power. We used education as the number one tool to help you take back your power and regain control of your life. Your pain has dictated your life long enough, the sooner you understand the complexity of pain and the simple things that can be done all on your own to start changing it right away, the more independent you become, the less help you need, the less helpless you feel.
When you understand what is going on with your body, when complex neurophysiological concepts are explained in laymen’s terms that are easy to understand, when you begin to see how your belief patterns about your pain and where it’s coming from actually impact the way you experience pain – you can begin to change pain.
3. We have been where you are. We have compassion and empathy because we have been on your journey. Personally, professionally, we have been submerged in chronic pain and have experienced how it can impact every facet of your life. We also know personally and professionally how to beat it. Our methods are tried, tested, and true. Patients who have been in pain for years after a car accident, or a concussion, have 1 session of education and return saying, I think my sleep is better, I think my headaches aren’t as frequent. Imagine what can happen in 6 treatments or 6 months of treatments.
4. We will act as your Case Manager to champion proper care. Treating persistent pain always requires a team-based approach. Your team is typically comprised of your physician, a counsellor/psychologist, a pain-management specialist (i.e. injections/medications), an exercise/movement expert, and any other treatment providers currently working with you i.e. massage therapist, yoga instructor. We will manage goal setting with you in regards to each of these therapies and touch base at scheduled intervals to address the goals of each therapy. If accommodations for work or school need to be made, if financial aid is deemed to be of value, we will help establish these pillars of care for you or send you to the right person to assist.
OUR COMMITMENT TO YOU.
We commit to utilizing every resource available and being with you every step of the way. Emergency lines are available to you to access our chiropractor at every step of the way. We will LISTEN to you. If you say “I don’t feel ready for this part yet” or “I’m nervous to have injections” or “I don’t know if I can afford to come every month anymore”, we hear you. You are a partner in your health care. What you want and what you are comfortable with matters. Care plans can always be adjusted to fit you, you are the master of your ship.
What we will not do is be the most invested person in your care plan. YOU must be the most invested person in your care plan. Failure to participate in parts of your care plan such as counselling or exercise therapy will severely and negatively impact your ability to change your pain. We ask that you respect the amount of time and energy we will dedicate to helping you improve your quality of life, by investing even more time and energy into following through with your care plan. Repetitive cancellations or no-shows without warning signal to us that you are not ready to change. And that is ok. But we will have to discharge you from care to make room for other people who are ready to take that big step.
HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?
The initial 3-hour visit with Dr. Chisholm costs $350. It sounds like a large investment but many people try to save money by having the standard 45 minute initial appointment and end up spending much more money in the long run with repetitive 30 minute visits to constantly address a shoulder problem today, a low back problem tomorrow, and plantar fasciitis the next week. When this occurs it ends up being the typical piece-meal approach to care that may feel good for a day or two but never really seems to last. That’s because once again you’ve been diminished to the sum of the parts; there’s been no opportunity to take the time to look at you as a whole.
Outside of the initial investment, how much it costs really depends on you. Many of the services we will be recommending will be covered by MSP (such as injections, medications, and some mental health services), are free (such as pain support-groups, Pain BC services, and educational videos). Others such as physical therapy and fascial release are covered under extended benefit plans. How often you attend in-office visits will depend on you: your care plan will factor in what you are able to pay. The less in-office support you have, the more diligent you must be with your homework, but we can absolutely make it work for any budget.
Once you have undergone an initial evaluation, Dr. Chisholm will determine whether or not you are a candidate for the Suncoast Integrated Health Compassion Program – an application based program which excepts up to (2) people every six months for free or highly subsidized care with any of our providers (chiropractor, massage therapist, or athletic/rehab therapist). When you choose to invest in your health, we like to honour that investment and give back to you by eliminate the cost barrier-to-care.
